Feature / Distant Place / Mission completed by Jan Brykczynski

The golden era of the Vistula River is long passed. There is no more need to monitor river traffic or to deepen its channels and clear it of debris. The signals and signposts have all disappeared.
Times have changed, and the golden era for people closely tied to the Vistula, like Bogdan, a push-boat mechanic, has also ended. They still speak of nothing but the changing current, manoeuvring at low water, welding metal ship plates. Today, their knowledge and skills are no longer needed. The people connected to the river’s former functions are redundant.
